Abbreviations on the rope or not?
Certainly abbreviations are good.
In wakeboarding, you can get closer to the boat where the distance between the waves are smaller (easier to jump over two waves) and even higher. 
Adjust the rope after boat model and speed. When you go on one water ski in the water ski path abbreviations are a must. But even when you go 
pleasure (free rides) with one or two skis, may be good with abbreviations. With a shorter rope, you can get higher speed and more racing feel.
